Craven’s history

Craven was founded in 1882 by Colonel Stone and was first called Sussex. The original settlement stood about half a mile east of where the village is today. Craven incorporated as a village on April 11, 1905.

The village sits in the Qu'Appelle Valley, north-east of Lumsden, where the Qu'Appelle River meets Last Mountain Creek. The Craven Dam lies on its east side.

Craven is best known for its annual country music festival, Country Thunder Saskatchewan. It began as the Big Valley Jamboree, started by Father Lucien Larré as a fundraiser for his Bosco Homes for emotionally disturbed youth. A rock music festival, the Kinsmen Rock'N the Valley, followed and ran until 2004, and the country music format returned in 2005.
